Over the past two decades, cellular immune response to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other viral pathogens has been an interesting area of research and has now evolved into a clinical application of assays that provide a precise measure of cellular response. Current antiviral preventative strategies have shown improved efficacy, but CMV continues to be one of the more common clinically significant infections in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients, and other immunocompromising conditions like HIV.

Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies, affecting approximately 1% of the US population [1], and the prevalence of peanut allergy is thought to be increasing [2]. In allergic individuals, anaphylaxis following exposure to peanuts can be fatal, requiring these individuals to carry epinephrine injectors at all times. Perhaps due to the serious nature of peanut allergies and its wide recognition, as many as 3 in 4 individuals are misdiagnosed as having peanut allergies [3], when in fact they have either asymptomatic to mild peanut sensitization or no sensitization at all.

Accurate and early identification of patients at high-risk for severe acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD) and related complications has the potential to improve patient outcomes following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT). High-risk patients can be preemptively treated for aGVHD prior to the onset of clinical disease while low-risk patients may potentially avoid unnecessary treatment. Validation of an interpretive algorithm based on serum ST2 and REG3α levels accurately predicts risks for allo-HCT patients when testing is performed at 7 days post-transplant, at the onset of aGVHD symptoms, and ≥ 1 week after the initiation of systemic therapy.
