A clinical lab in the state says it has developed a test for the novel coronavirus that is more than 99% accurate. KCUR reports Viracor Eurofins in Lee’s Summit claims it is capable of performing more than 1,000 tests per day and returning results the same day.

In the Kansas City area, three national private commercial labs — Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp and Lee’s Summit-based Viracor Eurofins — are now also processing tests. You cannot go there directly. Ask your doctor’s office if they use one of these labs and what criteria they use to decide who gets tested.

Viracor Eurofins, which was founded in 1983, says it's capable of performing more than 1,000 tests per day and returning results the same day. The test will allow clinicians to expand testing to patients who currently don't meet the eligibility criteria for public laboratory testing established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Global testing and laboratory services firm Eurofins, said two of its clinical diagnostic testing laboratories in the U.S. now offer testing for evaluation of COVID-19. On March 13, 2020, Viracor Eurofins, one of the largest infectious diseases testing laboratories in the U.S., is launching a stand-alone real time reverse transcriptase PCR assay for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2.

The company first became interested in developing a test for COVID-19 in December after watching what was happening in China. By the middle of January, Kleiboeker said his scientists believed they could help with the demand for test kits by developing their own in-house testing.

A local lab has received the green light from the Food and Drug Administration to begin testing for COVID-19 and it is able to process a thousand samples a day.

"Knowing the cause of the illness is the very first step to the most effective care," said Steve Kleiboeker, of Viracor Eurofins.

Doctors across the country are frustrated with the restricted access to COVID-19 testing.  The CDC has guidelines for which patients qualify. Those guidelines will not apply to commercial facilities like one in Lee’s Summit.
